The Boys of Spring

College Baseball opening weekend has arrived! I’m not one to sit out in the cold and watch baseball, so I will not be making my way down to Carolina Stadium until the weather warms up. But I will be following along via SEC Network and Twitter. While in college, USC won back to back National Championships in baseball and then competed in the championship game the next year. It’s been a fun couple of years surrounding Carolina baseball. A sunny, spring afternoon, there is no where else I would rather be than in a sold out stadium hearing a bat crush a ball and fans going wild. Carolina Stadium is standing room only most of the time. South Carolina has some of the best fans in the country surrounding all of our sports, but especially baseball after the run they have made the past 5 years.

If you don’t know the stories behind Carolina baseball being clutch, go look them up. Travis Haney wrote 2 books on our National Championships and the road to get to both of them.

Some of my favorite memories in Carolina Stadium and of Carolina baseball:

-Running into the stadium at the end of the game to send us to Omaha for the second year in a row

-Willy Wonka – One day I was standing watching the game and felt something hit the back of my head. I turned around to see this precious old man tossing out candy. After talking to him, I found out he was a former Gamecock baseball player that snuck candy into all the games to throw out to fans.

I am so excited for this season to begin and the Road to Omaha to start. I can’t wait to be back in Carolina Stadium cheering on my Gamecocks with my favorites.

Check back next week for a list of places to eat in Columbia if you are coming to town for a baseball game this season.
